Items in Istaria that have no purpose
This started in the bug thread:
I have scribed the Master Forms, and have the the skill, the tech comps and resources to make the Superior Cure Spell, the Superior Group Cure Spell and the Superior Antidote Potion. I am reluctant to make the spells as they show adv level needed to be over 100 and the same shows for the antidote potion.I have made and scribed the T5 spell and it is ineffective in the Doom, and it would appear that no player can use the Superior ones
Dev returned and stated that there would be no use for these items. They were just there for “completeness” as T6 items. When I pointed out that this was a load of crock and a waste of thier resources and time to make items that no one can use, I was told to make my own thread.
So I did. I made my own thread:
Okay, here’s your other thread.
When Manni’s Fang started dropping, up came the question, “What’s it for?” The response was “Nothing yet.”
There seem to be quite a lot of “Nothing yets” in Istaria.
Including much of the new content. New spells, potions and comps that have no purpose other than “for completeness”. That to me translates as “More stuff that you can’t possibly keep, carry or use BUT might, maybe and someday will be useful in the future.” Or shall I say “Soon™”? Not sure if that’s a word I’ve heard yet here in Istaria.
Yet we are asked to delete excess characters on Blight because there’s crunched for server space.
Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but what do I know. I DO know that I and many other players are scrapped for vault, inventory and plot space with the new DD content.
So what else in the game has no visible purpose?
Let me clarify visible purpose. Most of the T6 trophies with the exception of one that is actually used as a quest item. What are these for? Hoard? Coin?
Nah. You can get those elsewhere from better sources. I’m including the Traverntine Heart and other T6 trophies because it’s not used for it’s original purpose as a trophy, nor is it used in a quest.
Much like Manni’s Fang, it is “just there” for some unkown purpose in the future.
The only T6 trophy that is used for a quest or otherwise is the Greater Fire Golem Materia. (Dragon only)
It also worries me a bit that players can create these T6 spells and potions “for completeness” and sell them to unsuspecting players who think they are getting this great new ability only to find out they can’t scribe or use it.
Much like putting T6 Blighted figurines on the NT connie works.Yes, you can make them. Yes you can sell them. Can you use them? Not really.
If they are having such a strain on the database that they have to request our blight character copies of copies be cleaned up, why not all of them to help with this server crunch?
I don’t know about you guys, but with all the DD items, collectables and new comps that give no indication on what they are for, I can no longer use my INVENTORY for anything. I can’t get back to the crafting project because I have all kinds of stuff in my inventory that I’m afraid to delete because they might be on my next quest.
Another Dev that had decided to get on my post first thread in, took this as a rant and seemed to not understand the point after three other players told her that we were asking for help and clarification on what of these items were “collectables” and what items were not.
I responded:
Right, but the whole purpose of this thread is to list these known items.
If I KNOW that Manni’s fang has no use other than a collectible, I will treat it a lit differently than a comp I loot that I know will be needed for a quest I haven’t done.
I’m well aware that there are collectible items. I have a few of them. This is different than “Will I need this item in the future”?
They took this at face value and decided to tell me that this thread had been derailed (uhh.. yeah. You did it) and I should repost it. My thread was then deleted without warning.
Thinking that they did it, I reposted the important points and quoted the other players. Vhaz had a good idea to have these items that have no purpose as “collectible” so we can make a safe decision.
It got deleted again and I was told that it was against the TOS to repost a deleted thread and that I should have gotten a reason for the deletion.
1. I recieved no PM about why it was deleted, so I assumed it was as you told me, to repost it.
2. I would still like a discussion on “Manni’s Fang” items.
Tsar posted,
My first thoughts on reading this was which items I knew about to add to this list such as blighted radiant essence, T6 tech components, tech components with no tech associated with them, e.g. formerly what was storm ogre parts and damaged carapaces from tiny grass beetles.
This is a good example.
The old Storm Ogre parts have been renamed (Bal’kugk.. something not pronounceable). They’re used in the creation of the new dragon tech kit “Piercing Winds V”.
Knossos, who has no dragon might not see a need to keep these parts, but they do have a use.
Blighted radiant essence on the other hand, I have not found a use for. Maybe someone else has?
Since we are not allowed to talk to each other on the official forums to collaborate on these items, I ask this question here.

Let me start by saying that I do understand your concern, as I have several items stored in my vault or housing that I’m not sure need to be kept or not. However, I seem to have read the thread a bit differently than you. I saw Velea asking you to me more specific with the list. The only items you actually mentioned by name was Manni’s Fang, and the three T6 spells that you received a response about.
All other items you seem concerned about went unnamed: “much of the new content. New spells, potions and comps that have no purpose other than “for completeness”.”, “Most of the T6 trophies with the exception of one that is actually used as a quest item.” where we can presume you mean all T6 trophies except one that I don’t recall you naming specifically either.
I saw Velea asking for a list of items, rather than “here’s a nebulous situation with too few specifics for you to be able to address without taking significant extra time away from whatever project you’re currently working on just to do database searching with fuzzy parameters that probably won’t find most of the items I’m concerned about anyway.”
So, I think the list she asked for begins with:
Manni’s Fang
Items which require a player level over 100 (Superior Cure Spell, Superior Group Cure Spell, as two examples; hopefully items with this requirement can be searched for in the database)
Blighted Radiant Essence
Dried Blue Rose Petals
Prayer Scroll to Nyrevin (has hoard value)
Charged Memory Crystal (paid for but not used)
The Tome of Draining Magic by Khemarius
Reconnaissance Data
Burris’ List of Trophies
What else?
I wasn’t asking Veela to go into the dabase and look for ‘fuzzy parameters’. In fact, I really wasn’t trying to get her to do anything at all at that point.
I was asking the other players to help collaborate such a list. TMK, there is already a player that has a large list to this effect. She’s not been around for a day or two though and I’m trying to get her share of the list too. As a player of only one character, I can easily list things that pertain to me, but they may be part of a biped quest.
Hence why the discussion was needed. I’m further along on some of the new quests and other players are further along on some others.
The T6 trophies went unnamed because I wasn’t sure what all of these were not used for anything and what are used for something, but there’s no reason to keep extras of them.
For example, the Brachnia Gland. Yes it’s used.in a quest, but they must be looted during the quest. Meaning this item can be on the list of “useless items” because you don’t need to keep them and can have a free vault or inventory slot. However, because they have a purpose during a quest, they can be annotated as such:
Golem Heart of Traverntine
Brachnia Gland (Quest looted)
Myloc Harbringer Claw
Greater Fire Golem Materia (Dragon quest looted)
The Greater Fire Golem Materia was the only known T6 trophy before DD that had a use.
Although I find it very strange that Virtrium would implement a crapload of “collectible” items after complaining that players use too many slots, I like the idea of being able to obtain and keep items that are useless except for linking in RP and whatnot. I have tonnes of that stuff clogging my inventory, mostly stolen from quests.
It must, however, be made clear that collectible items are just that. Say something in the description; remove hoard values and attunement; retain or add a minimal coin value.
Once a list has been compiled, I would be happy to make unique icons for the items so that they don’t have to resemble trophies. For items that fit existing icons I would write a note saying so. My only reservation is that Virtrium will probably frak up the icons with random tinting like they did with rare bottlecaps, hot cocoa, et cetera.
